Do you often wonder how other people do it? How do they build self-discipline? How do they commit to working out every morning? How do they read so many books? How do they make their dreams a reality?
Meanwhile, you are stuck in a rut — unmotivated, procrastinating, and hating on yourself for doing exactly that. Aka, the negative feedback loop Mark Manson speaks about in his book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck.
The answer: they have learned to push through.
Today, I want to share the rule I created to help me, a master procrastinator, become the most self-disciplined version of myself.
This is how you build self-discipline.

What Is The 5 More Rule To Build Self-Discipline
The rule states that whenever you feel like quitting, push for 5 more.
This is a concept I came up with to help me grow from a procrastinator into a self-disciplined person without burning out.
Doing 5 more will teach your mind to continue when you don’t want to.
It’s such a low-effort, small habit that will have an enormous effect on your productivity and discipline.
You see, procrastination is a habit. And like all habits, it can be broken and replaced with a healthier one.
As for self-discipline, that means it can be learned.
Examples Of The 5 More Rule
So, how can you incorporate the 5 More Rule? Here are a few examples of how you can use it in your day-to-day life:
- Want to stop exercising? Do 5 more minutes or 5 more pushups
- Not in the mood to continue reading? Read 5 more pages
- Tired of studying? Revise your notes for 5 more minutes
- Want to give up working on your dream? Work 5 minutes longer
- Tempted by sugar? Don’t give in to the temptation for 5 hours; chances are you will forget about it
- Bad sleep schedule? Go to bed 5 minutes earlier
- Constantly on your phone? Go outside for 5 minutes and leave your phone indoors
- Hate drinking water? Take 5 more sips
- In a bad headspace? Journal for 5 minutes or write down 5 things you are grateful for
This list can go on and on. The main point is that once you can push for 5 more, you will build self-discipline, and before you know it, these basic things won’t take effort anymore.
You will start to show up for yourself, by yourself.
Conclusion
I don’t know whether someone patented this concept. This is merely something I came up with to grow into the most self-disciplined version of myself.
I hope this 5 More Rule can become a habit you incorporate into your daily life. And I hope you can see the results as I did.
