Synopsis: He came home to save the family ranch. Falling in love? Definitely not part of the plan.

After a career-ending hockey injury, Jaxon Chance returns to Kentucky, where he faces the challenge of saving the family ranch alongside his three brothers after inheriting it following the loss of both parents within the same year. However, there are some requirements to inherit the farm…

The last thing he needs? The girl he left behind, whose flower business is built on his family’s land. She wants nothing to do with him, but the ranch keeps bringing them together. And the more time they spend together, the harder it gets to walk away.

He came back for the ranch.

He might just stay for her.

My Spoiler-Free Vibe Check

The Good

CHEMISTRY. The tension between Jaxon and Summer, along with the banter, was definitely the highlight of this book.

THE RANCH. I enjoyed the ranch setting and the horse girl representation, lol. Let me not get started on a woman taking the lead on a farm! As an animal scientist myself, I loved this!

THE SMALL TOWN.  I never tire of this trope. The small town vibe was fantastically portrayed — especially the gossip that goes with it.

CLEAN ROMANCE. One Wild Chance is a clean romance with no cursing and just kissing. Definitely a plus!

The Bad

Unfortunately, one caveat caused me to lower my rating by one star.

The payoff didn’t hit for me. Let me explain… The stakes were high with the million-dollar debt and the inheritance requirements; I don’t disagree with that.

But something was missing, and I can’t quite place my finger on it. However, I do think it has to do with the payoff.

The characters faced real and huge issues, but the resolutions came too easily. It was also extremely predictable.

This is not a book issue, though. I blame this on personal preference. I am usually more drawn to tension-filled, high-stakes, emotional rollercoasters, and maybe this was just too fluffy for me.

That being said, One Wild Chance was a good time and a fantastic palate cleanser.

My Thoughts Summary

So, in short:

  • READ THIS IF you love easy-read, predictable, clean romances.
  • It is a solid 3.75-4.00 stars.
  • Perfect no-spice, no-cussing book.
  • Do I still think about it? Not really.
  • Will I reread it? Probably not.
  • Do I recommend it? Maybe, if you don’t mind predictability.

SPOILER ALERT

Memorable Quotes

  • It’s not that I can’t work with Summer. I can and I will. It’s that every time I’m around her, I want more of something I can’t have.
  • Failure is how you learn. Anyone who tells you differently has never actually tried anything worth failing at.
  • She’s a distraction I don’t have time for, but some things are worth losing focus over.
  • “I thought you kissed me to shut me up.” “No,” he says, pulling back and holding my gaze. “I kissed you because I couldn’t stand not kissing you. Because when you fight with me like that—” His thumb brushes over my bottom lip. “It’s all I can think about doing.
  • “I waited fourteen years to kiss you, Wildflower.” I let my palm stay on that door, hoping to hold on to this memory a little longer. “I’ve always been waiting for you.”
  • “You absolutely should,” he replies. “I’m a man of many talents, Summer. And spoiling you is one of them.”
  • “Summer, you look good in my name.”
