A book review on Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez

Just For The Summer by Abby Jimenez | Book Review

This book had me at the prologue! C’mon, an “Am I the Asshole” Reddit thread? Yes, please! Just for the Summer started light and fluffy before introducing soul-punching themes. An excellent combination!

It was a perfect palate cleanser for me after reading Still Beating (which contains much darker themes). It had me hooked, and I laughed out loud the whole time! I even got my husband to listen to the audiobook – that is an accomplishment by itself.

Synopsis (source: Goodnotes) – Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it’s now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They’ll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

Emma hadn’t planned that her next assignment as a traveling nurse would be in Minnesota, but she and her best friend agree that dating Justin is too good of an opportunity to pass up, especially when they get to rent an adorable cottage on a private island on Lake Minnetonka.

It’s supposed to be a quick fling, just for the summer. But when Emma’s toxic mother shows up and Justin has to assume guardianship of his three siblings, they’re suddenly navigating a lot more than they expected–including catching real feelings for each other. What if this time Fate has actually brought the perfect pair together?

My Thoughts

This is my very first Abby Jimenez book, and I have already added all her other novels to my TBR.

This is the third book in the series Part of Your World, but can definitely be read as a standalone. I didn’t know about the other books before finishing this one, and it was totally fine. The other books in this series are:

Just for the Summer is not a closed-door romance, however, the ‘explicit’ scenes are skippable and not extremely spicy. I would rate this a 1.5 on the pepper scale and classify it as a slightly open-door romance.

I am not usually a fan of the friends-to-lovers trope, however, this is the second book I adore with this trope. Justin is a walking green flag and will definitely make it to your book boyfriend list.

My favorite scenes:

  • Christine, Leigh, and the raccoons – iykyk
  • Justin on the unicorn floatie

All in all, I loved the character development, but I almost forgot some of the plot points while writing this. Therefore, I give it a 4.5-star rating.

I still 100% recommend this book if you are looking for a fun palate cleanser with emotional depth.
