Slow Living Hobby Ideas

1. Herb Gardening

There is something whimsical about having an herb collection in your kitchen windowsill. Not only is this a relaxing hobby to indulge in, but it is also practical. Ever run out of herbs in the pantry? Just harvest your homegrown fresh ones.

2. Vegetable Gardening

Whilst on the topic of gardening, it is one of my dreams to have planters filled with a variety of veggies one day. This is the definition of romanticising your life. Why opt for store-bought, genetically modified veg when you can grow your own? Also, you’ll save money.

3. Birdwatching

I am a birdwatcher, and it is so fun! I have a particular fondness for owls and birds of prey. I’d recommend a pair of binoculars and a bird book, and go at it. You can even document which species you’ve seen and create a whole journal around it.

4. Nature Walks

Unplug from the world and go on a walk – don’t take your earphones. This is all about connecting with nature and oneself. Observe your surroundings and use your 5 senses whilst you’re at it.

5. Baking Bread

How granny-core can we get? Homemade sourdough bread hits different. And the smell that will fill your house is incomparable.

6. Cooking From Scratch

And when I say from scratch, I mean from scratch. Make your own pasta, pizza dough, etc. Make cooking an experience rather than a task. Try new recipes frequently while sipping on a glass of rosé.

7. Tea Brewing

I am no expert when it comes to tea; however, steeping (this is apparently what it is called) is giving major whimsical vibes, and I’m here for it.

8. Potpourri Making

Potpourri is a mixture of dried flowers, herbs, spices, and fruits. It is used to add natural fragrance and decoration. This one is definitely at the top of my hobbies to try!

9. Candle Making

Have you ever come across those candle-making videos on social media? Well, it is a rabbit hole for sure! You can get extremely creative with this slow living hobby. 10 out of 10 recommend.

10. Perfume Making

My sister makes her own, and they do not shy away from store-bought perfumes. Just imagine the possibilities and all the different scents you can develop. You’ll basically feel like a chemist.

11. Knitting

Start your slow living journey by taking up some granny-core hobbies! Imagine how rewarding it must feel to wear a cardigan and scarf you made yourself.

12. Crocheting

I cannot get over the type of things people crochet these days. It makes me want to jump in on it! Just picture the plushie collection you can start.

13. Macrame Crafting

Are you in your boho era? Then you might as well pick up macrame art making. Macrame is the technique of tying different kinds of knots to create a decorative piece.

14. Embroidery

Embroidery is an ideal screen-free, creative, and relaxing hobby. You can even use it to upcycle clothing.

15. Sewing

Sewing is a practical skill that can turn into a creative hobby. Imagine altering your clothes by creating patchworks or making a boring item fun with lace, etc.

16. Thrifting

You can find gems while thrifting! Make it your goal this year to thrift more than you shop. Thrifting is a great way to live more intentionally and practice gratitude, both of which are synonymous with the slow living lifestyle.

Someone making pottery.

17. Pottery

One slow living hobby that I want to try is pottery. I highly recommend using dry clay. This type of pottery doesn’t require baking, is beginner-friendly, and allows for quicker creations.

18. Watercolor Painting

Of course, painting has to make the list! Create watercolor paintings and use them as decor for your home or gift them to friends and family.

19. Pressed Flower Art

Press your own flowers and make art with them. You can make a collage for a picture frame or use resin to create jewelry. You can find starter kits on Amazon.

20. Coloring

Coloring isn’t just a pastime for kids anymore. It’s a delightful escape for adults, too! Adult coloring books come with plenty of benefits, including the ability to melt away anxiety.

21. Crossword Puzzles

Where’s my nerds at? This is for us! Crossword puzzles have a special place in my heart – my mother and I do them together regularly. Take the evening, pour a glass of wine, put on some music, and complete a crossword puzzle.

22. Sudoku

Sudoku is another slow living hobby that is a workout for your brain. Bonus points if you can get your hands on physical Sudoku books rather than doing them on your phone.

23. Postcard Collecting/Sending

Collect postcards from every destination you visit and pin them to a corkboard, make a collage for a picture frame, or send them to loved ones.

24. Puzzles

Use a roll-up mat to move your puzzle while building easily. Frame your finished masterpieces and display them in your house.

25. Scrapbooking

Are you hoarding all your photos on your phone, or all your memorabilia in a box in your closet? Then it is time to create a scrapbook where you can relive your memories again!

26. Journaling

Journaling isn’t just writing down your emotions or summarizing your day. It can be much more creative and exciting than that. Opt for a bullet journal, dream journal, or a wreck-it journal.

A woman reading - slow living hobby ideas.

27. Reading

Reading has become my number one hobby over the past year. Just imagine: rainy weather, a hot cup of brew, and cosied up in a blanket with a book. There is no better way to pass your time. It also improves your English and vocabulary.

28. Creative Writing

I am one of those kids who wrote leisurely during my teen years, and I recently jumped back into it. I’ve always wanted to write a book, and I may or may not be busy with a little something ;-). Creative writing is an amazing outlet and escape.
