5 Powerful Habits To Build Self Discipline (#3 Is Life-Changing)

Ready to level up your life? Dive into 5 game-changing habits to build self discipline and transform your world for good.

I’ve already covered ‘6 Easy Ways To Master Self-Discipline: A Lazy Girl’s Guide’, but there’s much more to explore!

Self-discipline is a skill that can be learned; no one is born with it.

Today we will focus on the habits that’ll change you into the most disciplined person you know.

Let’s fill your arsenal with self discipline habits!

On a very unserious and unrelated side note: I know “self-discipline” is hyphenated and trust me I don’t like to write grammatically incorrect. However, I will use the unhyphenated version for SEO and searchability purposes here and there. Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk ♥.

Mastering Persistence: Essential Habits to Build Self Discipline Today

1. The Power of Non-Negotiable Micro-Habits to Build Self Discipline

Micro-habits are a great way to start your self-discipline journey. So what do I mean by micro-habits?

These are small and less significant habits that will teach you persistence. Such as:

  • Making your bed every morning
  • Reading a few pages a day
  • Drinking water after waking up
  • Writing one sentence a day in your journal

Start by focusing on one small habit until it becomes part of your daily routine. Once it’s ingrained, move on to the next small habit, and so on.

Implementing one non-negotiable micro-habit at a time will build immense self discipline over time.

Bonus tip: Use a habit tracker to check off completed tasks to hold yourself accountable.

2. Follow the 2-Minute Rule

David Allen came up with an amazing practice perfect for improving self discipline.

The 2-minute rule states that if an action takes less than 2 minutes, do it immediately

It’s a great way to overcome procrastination and nurture self discipline. How many times have you procrastinated on a task that’ll literally take you a few minutes?

It’s putting away the laundry for me! It will take two minutes yet I leave it for 2 days…

3. Embrace the “5 More Minutes” Rule

Now this is life-changing!

There is NO better way to build self-discipline and focus than the “5 more minutes” rule. Let me explain what it entails.

The rule states whenever you feel like quitting, push for 5 more minutes. *mind blown*

  • Want to stop exercising? Do 5 more minutes
  • Not in the mood to read? Read 5 more pages
  • Want to give up on your dream? Work 5 minutes longer
  • Tired of studying? Revise your notes for 5 more minutes

This is a tiny habit that will have an enormous effect.

4. Regularly Setting And Revising Goals and Action Plans

A goal without a plan is merely a pipedream.

The SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound) method is the best way to set goals. However, this is a strategy and not a habit. You can read more on how to stick to your goals here.

I want to focus on the habit aspect: regularly setting and revising your goals.

Make it a routine to check in on your goals and set new ones as needed. Personally, I do this monthly

There are many benefits to this practice:

  • It holds you accountable
  • It reminds you of your ‘why’
  • It motivates and inspires you to keep going
  • It breaks down long-term goals into manageable steps

All-in-all, it contributes significantly to your journey of self-discipline.

5. Your Day Starts the Night Before to Build Self Discipline

Yes, it doesn’t stop at goal-setting.

If my day is not planned in advance, I will be a zero on a contract! A structured day will help you build self-discipline

Get into the habit of planning your day the day before. It’s simple:

  • Make a to-do list
  • Prioritize your tasks
  • Allocate time to each task
  • Done.

Planning doesn’t always have to be extravagant and time-consuming. If it does take you long, you might’ve fallen into the productive procrastination trap. We’ll talk about that more someday.

Conclusion

Congratulations on taking the first steps to unlock your full potential

Remember, building habits take time, so celebrate every small victory. Plan smarter, add 5 more minutes, and become the most self disciplined person you know.
