How to Hold Yourself Accountable: 4 Strategies to Achieve Your Goals

Do you struggle to reach your goals? Do you know how to hold yourself accountable and use it as a weapon in your arsenal to accomplish your dream life?

For me, self-discipline and accountability fall under the same umbrella. Both can be used as a tool to achieve your goals when motivation is running low.

To hold yourself accountable means to fulfill your duties without any excuses. Today, I will tell you how to hold yourself accountable using these 4 simple strategies.

1. Reward yourself for the little wins

It is important to celebrate every milestone along your journey. It will keep you motivated to persist and move forward.

A reward can be anything from a spa day to watching an episode of your favorite series. I usually take coffee breaks with my victories, obviously ;-).

This form of positive reinforcement can be a wonderful place to start if you’re learning how to hold yourself accountable.

2. Get yourself an accountability partner

An accountability partner is someone who motivates you and checks in on your progress. This person will hold you accountable for all your goals.

I recommend you choose someone who wants an accountability partner themselves. That way you can motivate each other and you both will take it seriously.

Send your goals to your buddy and arrange check-in dates. The goals must be broken down into minor goals and be as specific as you can.

Get together for a cup of brew or Facetime weekly/monthly and discuss your progress. Motivate and praise each other accordingly. You can also determine what went wrong and work towards improving that.

3. Go public

This may put a lot of pressure on you but that is the point.

Post your goals or to-do lists on social media. It sounds daunting but it is a great motivator when you know the world is watching.

Otherwise, you can confide in family or friends. The fact that you know they will have follow-up questions will make you more eager to perform.

4. Goal tracker and timelines

There is nothing as satisfying as checking something off of your to-do list. It is incredibly motivating to complete a goal tracker.

One way of doing this is to use Notion. I use three columns:

  • The first one is the goal
  • When I start with that particular goal, it moves to the ‘progress column’
  • And when it is done, it moves to the ‘finished column’

This way you can keep track of your goals, which in turn serves as a motivator AND it is pretty!

It is an added benefit if you break down your major goal into smaller goals and put a timeline on it.

Conclusion

I hope this brought some insight to you on how to hold yourself accountable. Use accountability as another weapon in your arsenal to accomplish all that you dream of!

Have a lovely day wherever you are in the world.
