You are wasting your life away if you don’t stop living for the weekend. It is a toxic mentality that many of us face at some point. The good news is that we can change that!
Did you know there are 168 hours in a week? Monday midnight to Friday 5 pm is 113 hours (67.3% of the week). Therefore, a weekend only lasts 55 hours (32.7% of the week). We waste 452 hours in one month.
That’s enough math for my brain!
The crux is we need to embrace our entire week. Life is too short to wait for a weekend to be happy.
These 8 simple tips to stop living for the weekend are ideal if you despise the 9-5 life and get the Sunday blues. Let’s get to it!

8 Ways to Stop Living for the Weekend and Enjoy Every Day
1. Identify the problem
You need to know what the cause of the problem is before you can find a solution. It is a rule for every aspect of life.
There could be many root causes and everyone’s will be different, such as:
- You’re stuck in a career you detest
- Mental health-related issues
- You don’t know what your purpose is
- You’re completely burnt out
Start by identifying the source to stop living for the weekend.
2. Incorporate self-care into your week
Self-care has many benefits that can help with many of the above-mentioned issues. Some benefits include:
- Improves mental health
- It energizes you
- Reduces stress
- Improves productivity and focus
Self-care doesn’t have to be time-consuming. It can be as simple as taking a bubble bath instead of a shower or doing a face/hair mask while cooking.
You can incorporate self-care activities into your general everyday activities. Distribute it throughout your week.
3. Find happiness in the small things
Our lives get busy to the point where we don’t notice the small things anymore. We are caught up in the hustle culture that our society is promoting.
Take a breather and really look around. I love to use the 5 senses method to reconnect with the world around me. Here is my favorite example (I do this when I’m outside):
- I can see a tree, a bird, and the dogs.
- I pick a flower from the garden and feel it.
- The flower smells fantastic.
- I taste my coffee while taking the world in.
- The bird’s song fell on my ears.
- Utter serenity.
4. Change your mindset with positive self-talk
Negative thoughts overshadow everything positive in our lives. Therefore a positive mindset is crucial to stop living for the weekends.
The best way to learn this mindset is to flip your sentences around. Here are a couple of examples:
- Complain about work -> Thank you I have a job that allows me to buy food.
- I never have time -> Thank you for the things and people that fill up my schedule
- They are better than me -> What can I learn from them?
- I hate my body -> I have a healthy body with no illness.
- I fail at everything -> What can I learn from this failure?
See what a positive mindset can do to your speech. The way you talk will affect the way you act. Speak positively to yourself and you’ll reap the fruits.

5. Set a Friday goal to stop living for the weekend
I don’t know about you but I find an immense amount of joy in ticking off my goals and to-do lists.
Create a goal you can accomplish by Friday. It will get you excited to work towards it every day of the week.
Some examples include:
6. Consider changing it up
I know this one might seem drastic or not possible to a lot of you. But consider changing careers.
If it is your job that makes you miserable, take steps to change it. Keep your eyes open for future opportunities you can apply for.
Another option is to start a lucrative side hustle. This could have a financial and emotional benefit. Side hustles are doable. Pick a hobby you enjoy (here are 40+ hobby ideas), for example, crocheting. Learn how to crochet from free online sources such as Youtube. Make cute products and sell them locally to friends, colleagues, and later on, Etsy.
7. Get a supportive network to stop living for the weekend
We need social interactions, even if we are introverts. A supportive network might just be what you need.
Invite people into your life that light up your world. They can also be accountability partners that help you break free from the weekend mentality and pursue personal goals instead.
8. Find your purpose
We were put on Earth on purpose for a purpose. I wholeheartedly believe that.
Find your purpose and you will never work a day in your life. Every day will bring you joy, even in hardships.
However, I know a lot of people walk this planet not knowing what their purposes are and never find out. They live on auto-pilot, something I don’t want for you.
If you are one of these people, look here. I have 3 ways you can use to determine your purpose today!
Conclusion
Weekends are great and I see why people live for it. Heck, I suffered from bad Sunday blues for a long time.
However, I find myself content with every day. Some days are harder than others but I am in the process of finding joy in all aspects of life.
(But I still get excited for our weekend braai evenings! If you don’t know what that means you’re probably not South African. Google it, you won’t regret it!)
